Baklava Recipe – Best Turkish Baklava Recipe
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 16 oz. Package phyllo dough
- 1 pound chopped walnuts
- 1 cup butter or margarine, MELTED
- 1 T. Ground cinnamon
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 T. Vanilla extract
- ½ cup honey
Day 1 (2-3 people)
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees
- Butter the bottoms and sides of a 9 X 13 pan
- Chop nuts and toss with cinnamon. Set aside.
- Unroll phyllo dough and cut whole stack in half to fit pan
- KEEP PYHLLO DOUGH COVERED WITH A DAMPENED CLOTH TO KEEP MOIST
- Place two sheets of dough in pan, butter with a pastry brush thoroughly
- Repeat until you have 8 layered sheets.
- Sprinkle 2-3 T of nut mixture on top. Top with two sheets of dough, butter, nuts, layering as you go. The top layer should be about 6-8 sheets deep.
- Using a sharp knife, cut into diamond square shapes all the way to the bottom of the pan. It may be helpful to cut into 4 long rows, then make diagonal cuts.
- Bake for 50 minutes until baklava is golden and crisp
- Remove baklava from oven and immediately spoon sugar sauce over it
- Let cool uncovered
- Wrap lightly with plastic wrap to store overnight.
Day 1 (1 person does while others are doing the above)
- Boil sugar and water until sugar is melted
- Add vanilla and honey
- Simmer for about 20 minutes
