Baklava Recipe – Best Turkish Baklava Recipe

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 16 oz. Package phyllo dough
  • 1 pound chopped walnuts
  • 1 cup butter or margarine, MELTED
  • 1 T. Ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 T. Vanilla extract
  • ½ cup honey

Day 1 (2-3 people)

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. Butter the bottoms and sides of a 9 X 13 pan
  3. Chop nuts and toss with cinnamon. Set aside.
  4. Unroll phyllo dough and cut whole stack in half to fit pan
  5. KEEP PYHLLO DOUGH COVERED WITH A DAMPENED CLOTH TO KEEP MOIST
  6. Place two sheets of dough in pan, butter with a pastry brush thoroughly
  7. Repeat until you have 8 layered sheets.
  8. Sprinkle 2-3 T of nut mixture on top. Top with two sheets of dough, butter, nuts, layering as you go. The top layer should be about 6-8 sheets deep.
  9. Using a sharp knife, cut into diamond square shapes all the way to the bottom of the pan. It may be helpful to cut into 4 long rows, then make diagonal cuts.
  10. Bake for 50 minutes until baklava is golden and crisp
  11. Remove baklava from oven and immediately spoon sugar sauce over it
  12. Let cool uncovered
  13. Wrap lightly with plastic wrap to store overnight.

Day 1 (1 person does while others are doing the above)

  1. Boil sugar and water until sugar is melted
  2. Add vanilla and honey
  3. Simmer for about 20 minutes
