Stress became a part of our lives. Some of us can success to cope with it but some of us can not. Stress is attacking which comes to our bodies or our minds from outside. According to the American Psychological Association, 25% of Americans are under high stress.
For John Medina, our brain can cope with stress only for 30 seconds. In his book ‘Brain Rules’ he mentioned that our brain was not designed to cope with stress in the long run. It gives harm to the brain and memory functions. If we face stress in the long run, this will affect our immune system and we will get ill easier. Also, it will affect our sleeping routine. If you are under stress your body will excrete cortisol hormone. This hormone helps us to cope with problems when we are under threat ( it is an escape or fight reaction) but if you excrete this hormone much, you will awaken your neurons and by the time your neurons will die.
Since we do not want to wane our brain we should learn how to cope with stress. Here are some ways of coping with stress.
- Your diet is very important. It must be under control. Healthy foods are important. Add vegetables and fruits to your diet. This will also make your immune system stronger. In your diet, you should add five portions of different colors of vegetables and fruits. Vegetables and fruits involve potassium which balances your blood pressure. Surveys tell us that fruits and vegetables are good options to decline your blood pressure. And also do not consume salt very much.
- Do not drink alcohol and smoke while coping with stress. This will not help you. Smoking will threat your stress because of its ingredients.
- Do exercises regularly but do not fight with yourself while doing exercises. Especially do ponderous sports. Walk, ride a bicycle or dance. When you are active physically you excrete a hormone which makes you feel happy. This makes you lessen your stress and your blood pressure. World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends exercising at least twice a week. This will support your health.
- Allow time to yourself to rest. Resting is very important. Also, sleep well. If you can not sleep well this will affect your state of mind and your energy. If you control your sleep this will lessen your stress.
- Know your responsibilities. Do your responsibilities on time in order not be panic later.
- While targeting your objectives be realistic. You can not do everything perfectly. Do not forget you are a human being.
- Do meditation. Mediation is one of the best ways of coping with your stress.
- Learn breathing techniques. True breathing techniques will make you feel more comfortable. Sit in a comfortable position, close your eyes. Breath deeply from your nose and full your lungs with air. wait for a second and then give your breath by your mouth. Breathing techniques are accepted as a kind of mediation and in recent years it is very popular. Do this exercise 1-2 minutes in a day. According to surveys, breathing techniques reduce stress, depression, and aches.
- Yoga is also a good way of coping with stress. It is proved that people who do yoga are more calm people and have a more optimistic point of view against life.
- Music is another important thing in our lives of coping with stress. Listen to music and if you can play a musical instrument. This is also a way of lessening stress. Also, other kinds of art like painting will make you feel better. Painting is another way of telling yourself to others by using your emotions and abilities. It is a way of relaxing.
- Meet with your friends. Meeting with friends will make you feel better. If you can, organize days to meet and enjoy time with them. During these times, forget everything and just live the moment. Do not bring your problems to every place you go to.
- Feed animals. Animals are a good way of coping with stress. Touch them, feed them, talk to them, You will feel the difference after you began to look after a pet.
- Help people. If you help people you will live positive emotions about life. When you begin to help others you will forget your own problems and maybe you will understand that your problems are not so big in life. You will see how you can change a person’s life by helping him/her and this will make you happier.
These techniques will help you to give fewer reactions to stress so you will be more relax and calm during the day. Your attitude will change against life. These are relaxing techniques. By these techniques, you will feel better. Just give a break to apply these techniques and do not forget to smile.
